Lions and tigers and bears

Every second Tuesday of the month there is free admission to the zoo so I picked the kid up early from school and we took A and C to gape at the animals.

The place was crawling with slack-jawed yokels and kids ditching school.

The otters were deliciously cute and the smell of the penguin building made us gag. We bought paper cups of nectar and were assaulted by lorikeets. One of the polar bears looked suicidal.

The chimps had the most depressing cages made of peeling plaster and metal bars. One of them was lazily smearing his poo into the wall. Terribly depressing stuff when it's plain to see how much they are like us.

After the sadness of the chimps I refused to even glance at the elephants in their too=small pen. I have hear too many stories about their abuse and I know that one of them had died recently.

I love/hate zoos. I love looking at the animals, but hate seeing them in cages. I know that zoos do a lot of work to help keep these animals alive in the wild. In the end I keep visiting the places because I like to ooh and aah along with the kid.

I'm looking forward to the free concerts and the re-opening of the butterfly garden at the zoo this summer.

Oh...if anyone is reading this could you please send me extra good vibes? I have a job interview tomorrow with a place that might not suck and I am afraid that I will have to blow my nose in the middle of the thing. Yeah...so...good luck to me for that.
