dorkfysh's Diaryland Diary ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- RAWK! This is sort of a cross-post because I haven't had time to really sort through my thoughts on all of this. Saturday was the showcase for rock-n-roll camp. Me and Thea showed up at the venue around 5:00 and walked across the street to get some food and watch everyone arriving with their families. It was sold out by the time we made it across the street. Thea drew in quite a crowd herself. So many of our homemade family showed up. Thanks soooo much to all of you for coming and showing your support! The show opened with two little girls called The Black Peppercorns formed at last year's camp. They were 8 and 9 years old and rocked the shit OUT. They have a CD release party next month and I recommend checking them out. So very cool and adorable. There were 23 bands and every single kid had smiles across their faces. Not a single girl had the white face of panic. Mistakes were made, but they all laughed it off and kept going. There was no pressure to perform with perfection. The camp is all about showing these kids that they can do anything they set their minds to. Thea's band came out and a bunch of kids yelled out her name from the balcony. I could barely see her little self behind the drum kit. The singer, Amelia (who couldn't possibly be more sweet in her pink ponytails and red lips) was nervous and forgot the words, but she got the crowd going and everyone clapped along to "Hey Mickey". When they were done Thea came out and threw her sticks into the crowd. Awww....my little rockstar. *sniff* There were a few bands I would really like see get together and do more. One was T'He Anti-Titles They had this whole crazy rock performance art thing going on with a mock slo-mo fist fight and Fidget in spray painted Docs, black and white stripey tights, a crinoline with a black skirt, a black t-shirt with skeletons in various sexual positions all over it (she got in a bit of trouble for it earlier in the day, but the kid is a shit-stirrer. I like her LOTS) and her face was painted like a skull with big black streams of tears. Intense stuff. Then there were Thick Hips (best band name EVER). I don't know how to describe them other than hardcore with a bit of funk and just amazing. I would pay to see them in a second. I kept reminding myself that these kids had only been at camp for a WEEK. I am in awe of what Rock-n-Roll Girl's Camp accomplishes in such a short time. The logistics of the whole thing boggles my mind. Jake mentioned later that these girls are going to save rock and roll and I couldn't agree more. If you have a daughter who shows even the slightest interest in music....send her. There is so much more I could say about this stuff, but my mind still hasn't wrapped around the awesomeness of it all. Check out upcoming issues of Rolling Stone and London Telegraph for articles and listen to NPR for a story. I'm going to try to sit down and write something much clearer later on. 1:50 p.m. - June 23, 2003 ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- |
